IUG 2010 Poster Sessions

Poster 01 - Changing Course: Moving from OCLC to Skyriver for Original Cataloging

Lisa Robinson, Head, Cataloging & Metadata Services, Michigan State University

In August 2009, Michigan State University became the first library anywhere to use a new bibliographic utility, Skyriver.  On November 1, 2009, Michigan State dropped its cataloging subscription to OCLC and began using Skyriver exclusively for all cataloging.  This action marked a significant change for original cataloging, even though Skyriver’s interface was quite intuitive to use. This poster will describe the implementation of Skyriver for original cataloging, the process of change management during that implementation, how we currently use Skyriver for original cataloging, and the issues still under discussion.

Poster 02 - Comparing Webpac and Encore Searches Using Google Analytics

Paul Gahn, ILS Librarian, University of Memphis

Immediately upon migration to Millennium in 2008, the University of Memphis offered both the Webpac Pro and Encore search interfaces. Are these being used for different purposes or does their dual presence confuse searchers? Google Analytics will be used to compare and contrast use of these two interfaces during a sample time period.  This poster will show a process to extract search terms from Google Analytics and the results of an analysis of the searches recorded.

Poster 03 - Hello. I'm Encore.  And I'm a WebPAC.

Kristen Costello, Systems Librarian, UNLV
Priscilla Finley, Humanities Librarian, UNLV

The University of Nevada Las Vegas Libraries implemented Innovative's Encore next-generation search tool in July 2008, introducing the new search platform to casual users while continuing to make the powerful WebPAC functions available for power researchers.  This poster session reveals how each member of this apparent odd couple complements the other, presents a strategy for explaining the contrasts between the two to patrons, and examines data from search logs to confirm that each tool is reaching its appropriate user base.  Usability studies and staff surveys back up our findings. Stop by and discover how the two search tools compare!

Poster 04 - Making Millennium Run on Old Computers

Joe Reimers, Technology Support Assistant, Notre Dame Law Library

This poster will describe how to take an aging laptop and streamline it to the point where it will run the latest Millennium client.  While it won't be as fancy or fast as current desktop computers, it will still be more than adequate for many functions.

Poster 05 - Need a Book?  Will Send

Shelley Harrell, Chair, University Libraries, Azusa Pacific University

Azusa Pacific University has 3 libraries on two different Azusa campuses and 7 regional center campuses. The libraries implemented the holds module this past summer to accommodate the needs of the faculty, staff, and students at these different locations. This poster will explain how the holds module increased efficiency for the library and allowed the students to request books with one click.

Poster 06 - On-Shelf Items with Holds Report

Barb Jarvis, Millennium System Administrator, Cook Memorial Public Library District

Trying to interpret exported Millennium Hold data can be tricky.  Couple this with the "stranded holds" that can occur in Millennium when a patron unfreezes a hold (if the item is On-Shelf, there will be no page) or when a hold has made the Title Priority Paging rounds at all locations without being fulfilled.  This poster gives one library's solution to this frustrating problem by using Create Lists and Microsoft Excel to produce a weekly report of stranded holds.

Poster 07 - Printing Serials Labels

Leigh Duncan, Systems Librarian, Wright State University

In 2009, Wright State University Libraries began printing single monographic spine labels with Zebra printers.  The process worked so well, we wanted to print serials labels with the printers as well.  Because serials labels are not one of the Millennium print templates options, we had to make the procedure work with the legacy printing method in Millennium.  These posters will illustrate how we used Zebra TLP 2824 printers with Print Wizard to format and print serials labels.

Poster 08 - Student Aide! Adding Reading Lists and RSS Feeds to Course Records

Peggy Shaughnessy, Web Applications Developer, Poudre River Public Library District

We had a problem every semester around finals week. Community College students were coming in with printed reading lists and typing in nearly every title to just find items available to checkout! Requests often ended up monopolizing staff time at our joint use branch as they tried to help.  The Community College Librarian requested web page links to the online catalog for reading/report lists used in classes. We went a step further by integrating those lists into the course record for the appropriate class and adding RSS feeds.  Come see how we did it!
